Established in 1941, the USO’s mission is to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families across the globe. In line with our mission, USO El Paso located on Fort Bliss, has been home to hundreds of visitors per day. In August of 2006, the USO opened a 4,000 sq. ft facility to provide support to troops and families assigned to Fort Bliss, Biggs Army Air Field, McGregor Range and White Sands Missile Range.
While many US military installations were slated for significant personnel reduction and even closure, the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Act gave Ft. Bliss the largest net gain of active duty personnel of any installation in the United States. Ft. Bliss is now one of three main installations in the US for training and pre-deployment preparation. Due to the increased demand, in 2010, a 6,400 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility was added in East Fort Bliss along with a a satellite location in a field training area, and a Mobile Canteen/food truck . At the USO troops and their families take advantage of an internet café, video games, home theater, lounge area, lending library, study room and snack bar. The USO also provides support for wounded troops, youth literacy programs, entertainment, cultural and sporting events, care packages, phone card programs, cell phones, and support at deployment and homecoming events—all free of charge.
Most recently, a new El Paso International Airport location was opened in the spring of 2013. The USO is on track to successfully manage 200,000 visits from troops, their spouses and children this year.
